95% of Contemporary dolls start life with an Artist and a block of clay.  This goes for dolls from those you find in the toy aisle at your local toy shop right through to the doll kits which are on the market for the Reborn Artists. 

It is very surprising how many people have no idea where these dolls start their journey.  When the Reborn Artistry was in it's infancy it seemed common knowledge that the dolls and then kits started as OOAK's (One of a Kind Sculpts) but as time has passed and the industry has exploded into the general doll market, this knowledge and general interest in OOAK's has almost been lost.

As more and more Artists produce their work into other mediums, mainly Vinyl the OOAK Market has seen a dramatic decline, which is such a shame as a sculpture is a one off piece that can never be replicated and is a true piece of Art.

To try and help revive the OOAK Market and regain the respect and credit that these wonderful dolls deserve; Ruth has decided to offer a series of Sculpting courses throughout 2012.  Starting with Level 1 which is on offer here.

What will you Learn?

During the Level 1 class;

•  How to make an Armature

• How to use the "Star Rooting" sculpting stand

• Choosing the right clay

• Manipulating and softening the clay

• Making the three basic sculpting shapes used for sculpting babies of any size

• Basic Anatomically correct measurement principles for a newborn baby

• You will be taught how to sculpt the main elements for a newborn baby

• You will sculpt detailed Fingers

• You will sculpt realistic nails

• You will sculpt toes and be shown how to proportion then correctly

• You will sculpt detailed ears

• You will sculpt realistic and detailed noses

• You will sculpt sleeping eyes

• You will use Acrylic eyes and sculpt open eye sockets with tear ducts

• You will sculpt lips for a closed mouth

• You will sculpt a realistic tongue

• You will learn how to sculpt a realistic Body plate

• You will learn how to successfully bake your sculpture to eliminate cracking

• You will learn the tricks of the trade for smoothing the clay to a silky soft finish

The Level 1 Course will be perfect for those who have never touched Polymer clay before, right through to those who have had a go before, or even Artists familiar with polymer clay wanted to take a new approach with different techniques... everyone will be welcome on this Level 1 course.  You will not be sculpting a complete doll on this course, you will be gaining the skills needed to take your sculpting further. 

It is a requirement that you have completed Level 1 before moving onto a Level 2 course.

Each Course is certificated, you will receive both a printed framed certificate and you will also receive a digital Certificate to display on the internet.

The course will take place at the Discover Dolls Head Quarters classroom which is fully set up for an enjoyable class with plenty of natural lighting and facilities.  Unfortunately as this is an upstairs classroom we are unable to cater for disabled clients at this time.

Our courses are very relaxed and friendly, we will break for lunch for 45 minuets and tea and coffee will be readily available throughout the course

Below are the Available 2012 Dates for Level 1

All the babies shown here were sculpted by Ruth who will be sculpting alongside you as well as demonstrating each element covered in the class. You will also have the opportunity to study some finished OOAK's which Ruth will have on hand.

You will be provided with 2 blocks of clay at the beginning of the course. At the end of the 2 day course you should have a good understanding of the principles of sculpting in polymer clay.  All your sculpted parts which you have made on the course will be yours to take home along with any clay you have not used.
